Secrets of the Dead "Umbrella Assassin"
Witness this amazing Cold War story about a Bulgarian dissident who was shot with a poison pellet from an umbrella gun while he was waiting at a bus stop. For many reasons over the last 30 years, the investigations were thwarted, but in our film we go back and re-examine it from start to finish. We even name the triggerman, who is still on the loose in Europe. This is a forensic investigation that looks at how the gun and the poison pellet actually worked, but it's also a bigger Cold War political investigation that explores why the various investigations were stonewalled, and how the KGB may have been working with the Bulgarians to pull off the assassination. Even though the assassination happened a long time ago, the story is relevant right now because the statute of limitations on the murder is about to run out, so within a few years the assassin will have nothing left to worry about. To complicate things even more, Bulgaria is currently applying to be a member of the European Union, so they are not particularly interested in having this investigation into their shady past reignited.Air Date
