Secrets of the Dead "Irish Escape"
prisonerIn 1876, six Irish political prisoners escaped incarceration in Western Australia aboard the American whaler Catalpa. Under the pretext of a whaling voyage, the ship's captain, George Smith Anthony, had sailed from New Bedford to liberate the prisoners and bring them to America. Secrets of the Dead tracks down descendants of Anthony and the prisoners, and re-enacts the dramatic rescue, including a fierce confrontation between the Catalpa and the HMS Georgette, the British steamer that tried to capture the escapees.
