The Blair Decade
May 2007 marks the 10th anniversary of Tony Blair's election as Britain's prime minister. His three back-to-back election wins in 1997, 2001, and 2005 make him the most successful Labour Party leader in British history. After 18 years of Conservative rule, Blair was in power barely three months when Princess Diana, "the people's princess," died in a car accident in Paris. At a time of profound national mourning, Blair secured his reputation for being in tune with the popular mood.Credited with helping secure a long-sought peace in Northern Ireland, he went on to commit British troops to Kosovo - persuading President Clinton along the way - and then in 2003 to support President Bush's invasion of Iraq in the face of the largest street demonstrations in his country's history. By sacrificing much of his domestic agenda for an unpopular U.S. ally and a war that grinds on, Tony Blair, international statesman, becomes more lauded than Tony Blair, prime minister.
As Tony Blair prepares to leave 10 Downing Street, this documentary tells the story of a controversial premiership and an extraordinary personal journey of great battles, political rivalries, and moral dilemmas. The program provides the first authoritative television analysis of Blair's decade in office and the legacy he leaves to his presumptive successor - and longtime rival - Chancellor Gordon Brown. Features interviews with a number of American and British leaders, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
