Reluctant Saint: Francis of Assisi
Young Assisi In this documentary, Saint Francis is described as a wealthy playboy, soldier, businessman, preacher, defender of the poor, mystic and even a guiding light to environmentalists and animal rights activists. This special features re-enactments and sumptuous illustrations of medieval art and is filmed in Umbria, Italy where the founder of the Franciscan order lived and worked. Donald Spoto, author of the book upon which the program is based, is interviewed along with other historians and members of the Franciscan order that carries on the teachings of St. Frances today. The documentary offers new insights into a life that has engaged the hearts and minds of millions over the centuries.
