This Detroit Public TV local special examines ways to level the healing field. Presented locally in conjunction with the PBS four-part series Remaking American Medicine, the program reveals innovative approaches that eliminate informational and cultural barriers between patients and health providers.

The local Channel 56 broadcast reveals five strategies for improving the quality of care as it identifies ways that patients, doctors, families, hospitals and communities can play a role. A Healthy Partnership will illuminate successful local efforts to reduce disparities and improve the quality of care for all. Segments will demonstrate how:

1. Care for people with chronic dieseases can improve when the patient assumes more responsibility for their recovery and maintenance of the disease.
2. Communication between doctor and patient is enhanced through medical school training that breaks down cultural barriers.
3. Elderly family members can retain their independence through programs at daytime centers that cater to their needs.
4. Teamwork between health care providers can result in better maintenance care for those with chronic diseases.
5. Communities can provide programs that promote good health, like a Detroit barber shop that offers free haircuts to patrons who have their blood pressure checked.

A Healthy Partnership is being broadcast to provide information intended to imrpove doctor/patient relationships, foster better treatment of chronic diseases, and shed light on new technologies and treatments.
