Detroit Public TV Community Education &
Outreach
If You Had a Television Station, What Could It
Do For You?
WTVS Detroit Public Television's mission is to educate, entertain
and inspire in partnership with our community. Beyond the two million
viewers and thousands of members who interact with the station, we make
personal connections with thousands of families and organizations in
Southeast Michigan each year.
Ready to Learn Workshops
- Detroit Public TV offers free community workshops to distribute free
books and encourage literacy to low-income families. Each year, DPTV
reaches over 3,000 families and distributes over 9,000 books as part
of its "Ready to Learn" commitment to programs for children.
Reading
Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Contest - Open to kids
in grades K-3. Write and draw an original story and win fabulous prizes!
The Enrichment Channel
- Detroit Public TV produces and distributes early elementary literacy
instruction products - videos and CD-ROMS - under The Enrichment
Channel banner. They introduce children to the concepts of community
and regions, content aligned with the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks.
The Reentry Project
- When ex-offenders are released from prison, they are often adrift,
facing a multitude of societal, economic and family issues. Detroit
Public TV is helping college students and others be more aware of reentry
issues through public screenings and discussions of PBS programs that
address the topic.
Aging Out - Similarly, young adults, ages 14-23, often have
difficulty leaving the foster care system. Detroit Public TV is working
with community partners to recruit mentors and marshall the resources
to help kids become independent without the family support most young
people rely on.
Our Families
- Our Lives - In addition to broadcasting this landmark
PBS series, American Family, that featured the first all-Latino
cast, Detroit Public TV has partnered with many Hispanic organizations
to deliver important educational materials and health care information
to the community. We've also created a web site where people can
share their family stories and encourage diversity.
Sesame
Street Live - Join us in February 2007 at Detroit's Fox Theatre
for the opening night performance of Sesame Street Live's new stage
show. All proceeds benefit Detroit Public TV.
Detroit Public
TV Kids Club
Throughout the year, our popular Kids Club draws families to fun events and programs with helpful information like Halloween and fire safety, getting ready to enter kindergarten and much more. Click and Learn
Websites
Detroit Public TV has conducted training sessions for librarians, teachers and media specialists to acquaint them with five CPB web sites for "tweens" that explore topics like self-expression, scientific discovery and media literacy. Detroit Public Television also produces weekly programs in partnership
with the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Economic Club, Wayne
State University's business school, the Detroit Free Press, the
Detroit News and the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan.
Detroit Public Television believes sharing the power of media to provide
knowledge and understanding. We will continue to ask the question: What
can Detroit Public Television do for the institutions and people in
our community, especially children? We do that in partnership with you.
Thank you for your support.
