NAS-Track Racing: Madison Bike Races
106: Championship Race
Friday, 9/10 By: Tim Rimer (9/7/04) Dave Koesel of Livonia and Ronnie Sink of Rochester Hills claimed first
place Friday in the NAS-Track Championship race, Koesel winning enough
points to be awarded as the best racer overall.
Koesel and partner Sink dominated the track as Team Neon, finishing first
in all four races and winning an amazing 95 points altogether, more than
twenty points ahead of second place Team Purple.
Unlike every other race throughout the season, the Championship event
is the only time racers are able to pick their partners. Teams are normally
determined by previous results and finalized by NAS-Track Chairman Dale
Hughes.
Both Koesel and Sink had made impressive showings in previous races,
and partnered together, the two formed an unbeatable team.
Neon's only competition came from NAS-Track prodigy Luke Cavendar of
Troy and veteran racer Rick Denman as Team Purple. Still, they did little
more than stay on Neon's wheel, never overtaking them in laps that counted.
In the end, Koesel's cumulative points added up to 418, surpassing Andre
Champoux of Garden City, who had held the most points overall at the start
of the evening. Faced with Neon's incredible performance, however, Champoux
could not help falling to second place with 355 points at the end of the
competition.
Friday's race, originally scheduled for July 30, was delayed due to uncooperative
weather. Since the racers were involved in another competition in August,
the event was rescheduled in September, leaving the championship undecided
for an entire month.
