No Ordinary Joe. What Mental Illness Is Not...
There have been many myths and misunderstandings about mental illness. Advances in research and treatment indicate that these disorders are:
  • NOT caused by stress or poor parenting
  • NOT a form of mental retardation
  • NOT a hopeless condition
Impact of the family
Family members may struggle with unwarranted feelings of guilt. Because of the stigma associated with mental illness, family members often keep the illness secret, perhaps mentioning only that they have "family problems."
How You Can Help
  • Give support. Those with a mental illness and their family members are coping with a treatable condition, yet often receive little support or understanding from others.
  • Become better informed. Myths and misinformation about mental illness are common and reinforce discrimination, social stigma, and fear within the community.
  • Encourage increased community support. Comprehensive treatment in the form of housing, vocational rehabilitation, and employment are needed.
